Johannes Gutenberg introduced what can be regarded as the independent invention of movable type into 15th century Europe (approx, 1450). This photograph shows how until comparatively recently printing with moveable type had not changed very much. A composing stick is show laid on top of the lower case, a wooden tray for holding loose pieces of type, so called because originally it held the lower case type sizes. Can you guess what the upper case held?
